What is engineering? Why would you be interested in it?  Good questions … and we have some answers for them!

Engineering is the practical application of science for the benefit of humanity – in other words, engineers have been involved in some way in most of the man-made things around you. Your house, your bike, your mobile phone, the bus you take, the pavements you walk on, even the clothes you wear – all of them needed engineers to create them.

And why would you be interested? Because engineering offers a vast range of careers which could take you anywhere in the world and involve you in fascinating work, whether you want to create a new space shuttle, provide clean water for African villages or produce an even tinier MP3 player.

There are many different kinds of engineering, and most of them involve a lot more than moving big hunks of metal around a factory. It would be difficult to cover every branch of engineering on one site, so here are a few of the main kinds:
