Summary |
The winners of the regional heats from Somerset, Bristol and Cheltenham and Gloucester regions will complete in the Flying Start Challenge Grand Finals.
For the past 5 months pupils in schools from Cheltenham to Somerset have been busily designing small hand powered gliders to take part in the flying start challenge, a scheme run by graduate engineers in Aerospace companies across the regions. The grand final at the Fleet Air Arm is their opportunity to test their gliders, their project planning knowledge and also take part in activities at the museum, all competing against pupils from the other schools. At the end of the day there are various categories for prizes, with the best school getting £1000 for equipment and the winning team a free flight in a real glider.
The scheme is designed to get pupils interested in aerospace engineering, showing them the broad range of skills, from creativity to budgeting, that it develops and requires.
