Formula Schools is a competition giving Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils the chance to design, build and race their own, biofuel or electrically-powered, radio-controlled cars. It is tailored to deliver Engineering qualifications, with fully mapped resources and guidance available for: GCSE Engineering, NVQs in Performing Engineering Operations and the Engineering Diploma at levels 1& 2.
Competing schools come from around the country to put their designs through their paces at an annual spectacular race day on the world-renowned Silverstone circuit, attended by leading companies from the UK’s engineering industry.
Throughout the year, pupils with varied talents work as a team to develop the project from start to finish. This involves the preparation of innovative business and engineering models as well as forging links with local engineering and technology based companies. The balance of points is structured to reward the work carried out prior to race day within the engineering and teamwork rounds. This is judged through regional events at locations where schools can come together, leaving the concentration of race day for the different racing rounds! Pupils from state and independent schools taking part in the all-terrain project also get the chance to form partner teams and get together for practices and regional events, prior to race day.
Schools are supplied with all the hardware needed to make a starter chassis and are linked with a local technology-based company to help develop their car through a wide range of engineering disciplines. Formula Schools also gets together with educational institutions and businesses to showcase opportunities for further engineering training and career prospects, offering helpful information, advice and visits to participating schools throughout the year.
A range of up-to-date curriculum materials are available to participating schools including: technical information, research material, case studies and mapped units for courses. Specialist support is available online, via telephone and in-person through visits to participating schools and colleges.
