Organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Formula Student is an annual competition whereby university students design, manufacture and compete with a singleseat racing car from scratch.

There are five entry classes, which includes the new Class 1(A) category that encourages low carbon race cars to compete at the event. Students experience everything from research, design, manufacturing and development and receive valuable feedback. Static and dynamic tests are set so that judges can measure students’ understanding of the science behind their cars and so that students can demonstrate their car’s performance.

Class 1 Cars are designed and built specifically for the event. Class 1 (200) Entries in this category are cars from previous years which have been evaluated and improved upon. Class 1 (A) Allows the development of low carbon race-cars using a previous Formula Student car or creating a new car. Class 2 For teams whose car is not yet fully developed, but which may have a completed chassis and other components. Class 3 The initial entry point into Formula Student, in which teams design a car according to the specifications and receive feedback from the judges before they face the challenge of manufacture.

This competition requires the development of all the skills needed to create a highperformance machine. Students not only gain knowledge of design and manufacturingbut of management in dealing with pressure and tight deadlines as well as marketing and communication, as they must finance, document and present their manufacturing process. Engineering students also have the opportunity to team up with counterparts in other parts of the university to get the best skills on board for their team. They are also encouraged to get involved with industry sponsors, who often prove to be useful career contacts.

In July, teams from around the world converge at the renowned Silverstone circuit over four days in Europe’s biggest student motorsport event. As well as teams competing from UK universities, Formula Student attracts teams from countries across the globe, including: India, Canada, Greece, Iran and Korea.

There are many prizes and awards for successful teams, from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and sponsoring companies, rewarding performance, design, driving skill and team spirit.
