Teams of up to six Year 8/9 and S2 pupils are partnered with local companies and universities under the new Go4SET scheme. Pupils get a taste of real-life industry issues in the free 10-week programme exploring science, engineering and technology (SET) before making their Key Stage 4/Standard Grade options.

Go4SET provides a real-life, environmentally themed, SET project which is relevant to both the school and company. The Go4SET topic themes for 2008/09 are Water and Energy. A company mentor is assigned to each school to provide professional guidance during the project and to oversee it until completion. Pupils participate in team building exercises, project management, report writing and presentation skills seminars in preparation for the final assessment.

Following the end of the 10-week project, there is a Go4SET Celebration and Assessment Day where all the projects are displayed. The scheme has a competition format and prizes are awarded in a number of different categories. Prize-winning teams receive a £250 cash prize to help fund ongoing science, engineering and technology activities within the winning school and all participating pupils receive certificates.

All the required materials are provided upon registration and teachers receive extensive support and guidance from the outset including detailed guidance notes and regular teacher briefings. This is an extra-curricular activity which is recognised by the BA CREST awards. Formal accreditation for teachers is also available through the College of Teachers.

Go4SET is run by the EDT, an independent educational charity, and is a member of The Royal Academy of Engineering’s Best Programme.
