The Smallpeice Trust is an independent educational charity that promotes engineering, design, manufacturing and technology careers to young people. Core activities include running short four-day courses for students in Years 9 to 12. Courses take place around the school holidays in January, April, June and July.

Students have the choice of around 30 different courses with activities to develop their skills in creativity, design and teamwork. Subjects include biomedical engineering, nanotechnology and supercomputing.

All courses are heavily subsidised and one or two are free, to ensure every student can consider finding out what a career in engineering might entail. Projects are based on real-life engineering challenges and engineering professionals are on-site to give guidance throughout the stay.

Some of the companies on board include; Airbus, Jaguar Land Rover and The Home Office Scientific Branch. In addition, there is a fully supervised programme of evening-based social activities ranging from go-karting, laser quest and bowling. Here are a couple of examples of the course options available:

Engineering Experience: This is a foundation course teaming Year 9 pupils with young engineers, hand-picked from industry, who mentor students through every stage of product development, from initial concept to final testing. Just some of the projects include developing a robotic security device to protect the Crown Jewels, designing a solar powered ship, aeroplane and train and building a dry dock to prevent water from flooding.

Marine Technology: These Year 9 and 10 courses are financially sponsored by the Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust and offer a real insight into the marine world. Students learn about naval architecture, ship design and off-shore construction and are challenged to design and build an actual ship. There’s also a series of hands-on workshops, visits to local businesses plus access to the latest equipment.

Places are allocated on a first come first served basis so please apply early to avoid disappointment.
