Educational charity The Smallpeice Trust runs half-day STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) activity sessions designed to enhance Year 8 and 9 students’ aptitude for problem-solving, creativity, design, and engineering.
The Smallpeice Trust works with teachers to decide on the most suitable project for their school and then groups of 50 pupils work together in small teams on ‘design and make’ activities.
Easy to organise, they’re inspiring and fun for everyone taking part. One of the most popular activities is the Wind Turbine Challenge in which students build a wind turbine that minimises costs, yet generates as much energy as possible; with a further requirement that the tower must be free-standing and structurally robust to support heavy components and moving parts. The teams are assessed on the standard of their design and its ability to withstand an electric fan, plus building costs, power generated, team-working and aesthetics.
Other projects to choose from include Aeronautical Design, Bridge Building, Communication Tower, Junkyard Wars and building a super-capacitor powered vehicle. The course can be fitted around the rooms and equipment available and times are flexible to suit normal school hours.
For students choosing Key Stage 4 options, these STEM day activities are especially designed to complement the national curriculum in science, technology, engineering and maths.
