The Year in Industry (YINI) provides paid, degree relevant work placements for students taking a gap year before or during their degree course. The scheme specialises in engineering, science, technology, IT and business and the placements generally run over a 9-12 month period in line with the academic year.
Students get the opportunity to undertake interesting and diverse projects and to learn how business works whilst earning a competitive salary. In addition, the skills they develop will enhance young people’s degree and employment prospects as well as giving them the chance to save cash to get them through university or to go travelling.
Applications are encouraged as early as possible (as soon as they are interested in a placement) so The Year in Industry can begin the process of matching the needs of the student and company and to ensure a challenging and rewarding placement is organised.
The Year in Industry provides support from the initial placement search and CV sending service to industry mentoring throughout the placements plus other management training and contributions towards professional accreditation. Many companies view The Year in Industry as an important part of their graduate recruitment programme, and go on to sponsor placement students through university.
YINI Combo is an addition to the programme and gives students the opportunity to work and travel in their gap year as part of a structured placement. The Year in Industry is working with four of the leading gap year travel organisations to create more opportunities for students (discounts are available through the travel providers).
The Year in Industry runs regional and national competitions: The Year in Industry ‘Contribution to the Business Awards. Winners from the regional finals, which take place in June and July, receive £500 and get to represent their region in the national final, which takes place in September. In 2009, £1000 will be awarded to the winner and there will be three additional prizes of £500 each for Innovation, Best science and engineering application and Environment. The Year in Industry school information packs are available which highlight the opportunities and benefits.
The Year in Industry is run by the EDT, an independent education charity, and is a member of The Royal Academy of Engineering’s Best Programme.
