The Youth Engineering Show is a fast-paced, action-packed and informative industry-sponsored show primarily for Years 7 and 8 pupils, which highlights the fundamental importance of engineers in solving the problems of the world, today and tomorrow. It opens the audience’s eyes to the many and varied career opportunities that are available to engineers of all disciplines, whether that is automotive, aeronautic, marine, construction, or one of the many other fields available. This key age group is targeted specifically so that upper Key Stage 3 pupils can make informed choices when it comes to their Year 9 options, and be encouraged to consider vocational options such as GCSEs in Applied Science and Engineering.
The event is hosted by TV professionals and supported by real-life industry experts as well as young people in the early stages of their engineering careers. It takes the form of an exciting mix of live and recorded AV presentations and demonstrations about all forms of engineering. It covers areas as diverse as cars to computer software development, creating carbon neutral factories to green power generation and robotics to mobile phones.
In 2008 the Youth Engineering Show was at the heart of the Learning Grid’s annual flagship “Rockingham Festival” which ran from 1st-3rd July at the Rockingham Motor Speedway near Corby, Northants where nearly 2,000 pupils and teachers attended nine performances over 3 days.
Also new for 2008 was the North East Youth Engineering Show created for One North East involving engineering employers in the region. The shows attracted a record 1,884 children and teachers during the three days of shows in late June. The 2008 Youth Engineering Shows included demonstrations and presentations by Aston Martin, BAE Systems, EON, Honda’s Asimo, IBM, Nissan Nova International and Pepsi Co.
The Youth Engineering Show was first staged in 2000 and since that time over 11,000 young people and their teachers have been both informed and inspired about careers in engineering.
