Quality standard activities: Greenpower Goblins and Greenpower F24 and F24+
Greenpower is dedicated to promoting engineering and technology as careers to pupils throughout their school life, through an exciting hands-on project to design, build and race an electric racing car. The team is based at Littlehampton and Greenpower national events are run at the nearby Goodwood Motor Circuit whose owner, the Earl of March, is Patron of Greenpower. The national final in the middle Sunday of October is always impressive, with at least 70 cars on the grid from all over the country.
Greenpower is growing in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers who's members around the UK act as mentors to school teams entering the competition for the first time and help organise local events.
For Primary schools, Greenpower Goblins offers the opportunity to build a functional electric kit car often with the help of local sponsorship. The school simply needs to provide a seat and bodywork; the kit can be dismantled at the end of the season and re-used.
Formula 24 and F24+ are more advanced. Secondary school pupils design and build the complete car, using a standard 24-volt electric motor and four 12-volt car batteries but with the freedom to create their own chassis, suspension, bodywork and transmission. Formula 24+ is open to apprentices and college students, running a shorter race at higher speeds.
