The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust is an independent charity operating throughout the world. It was established in 2004 by the Lloyd's Register Group.
The Group's Constitution requires it to support public education within the transportation industries, engineering and technological disciplines and for many years it has made funds available for this purpose. In 2004, it decided to bring a sharper focus and greater professionalism to its charitable work and set up the Lloyd's Register Educational Trust (LRET) to fund advances in transportation, science, engineering and technology education, training, and research worldwide for the benefit of all.
The LRET is wholly funded by the Lloyd's Register Group. However, once the Group has made a donation to the LRET, it has no direct say how it is used. That decision is taken by the LRET's own Board of Trustees, with guidance from its full-time Director, Michael Franklin.
The LRET funds activities in four categories that form a continuum of support for people from a very young age:
- pre-university education - engaging school children
- university education - supporting students studying for a first degree or doing a postgraduate course
- vocational training and professional development - supporting people in work who are enhancing their knowledge and skills
- research - funding fundamental industry research programmes at existing or new 'centres of excellence' at universities and academic institutes
