An action-packed 40 minute show for secondary School children that explores the breadth of engineering from A to Z. Presented by Timandra Harkness, this show will open children’s eyes to the role that engineering plays in all aspects of modern life from athletes to wave power, communications to supersonic land speed record attempts.

Science Museum

This amazing spectacle features bubbles of all sizes going up, down, this way, that way, and all over the place… with a little help from the audience! Find out the secret Science Museum bubble recipe, learn how certain materials can change the way bubbles behave, and step inside the famous human bubble. Explore the science of bubbles in this interactive curriculum linked show.

Primary Engineer

Teaching young children the basic principles of engineering through Design and Technology (D&T), enabling them to make and control devices they have designed, is the foundation of Primary Engineer, which offers training and training resources for teachers of Key Stages 1 and 2. Primary Engineer was one of the first activities to achieve the Learning Grid’s Quality Standard and founder Susan Scurlock will be on hand to demonstrate the excellent curriculum materials that accompany the activity. For Rockingham, the Primary Engineer team is offering half-day projects for visiting schools that give a flavour of the Primary Engineer programme.

Spectator Events

4 x 4 in Schools

4 x 4 in Schools, which is supported by JCB, challenges pupils to design and build a model four-wheel drive vehicle and navigate it around a specially-designed track.

Schools use this competition to deliver design and technology at Key Stage 3 and 4 - and the quality of the designs has to be seen to be believed. We are delighted to welcome the National Finals to Rockingham for the first time on 2nd July.

F1 in Schools

F1 in Schools gives students the chance to design and manufacture a model CO2 powered car of the future, testing their skills against other schools in their region, nationally and internationally. The East Midlands teams hold their regional heat at Rockingham.

Greenpower Formula 24 and Goblins

Greenpower is the UK’s leading electric car racing competition, where schools design, build and race their own vehicles. At the Festival, Greenpower will be staging the Midlands regional heat for Formula 24, the secondary school competition, and the ‘Gathering of Goblins’ for primary schools.

Shell Eco-marathon Youth Challenge UK

The Shell Eco-marathon is an annual fuel economy competition organised by Shell Global Solutions in which competitors run a vehicle around a circuit using as little fuel as possible. Pupils aged 11-14, design, build and compete with their own car in the national event, held at Rockingham.
